Sao Tome – Government update

The prime minister-designate of Sao Tome, Rafael Branco, has said that he will form a government by the weekend. At the moment, it will be an MLSTP/PSD and PCD coalition. However, Afriqueenligne reports that the president’s MDFM party may also be part of the coalition. This would make sense given that the president has consistently supported Branco’s nomination recently and also because it would leave the ADI party as the sole opposition party against what will probably be billed as a government of national consensus.

As I posted before, the ADI’s leader, former prime minister Patrice Trovoada, took a court case to try to prevent a MLSTP/PSD-led government. However, the court has dismissed the case, leaving the way open for a new government to be formed.

Also, President de Menezes met with the Council of State, a body of the great and the good, who advised him not to dissolve the legislature. In that event, the only possible option was the formation of an MLSTP/PSD -led government. So, unlike Haiti, it looks as if the government crisis in Sao Tome is coming to an end.
